Ancient Handwritten Shahnameh at Tajik Library
Jan 9, 2006

One of the oldest handwritten Shahanamehs, Ferdowsi's masterpiece, is kept at Tajikistan's Ferdowsi Library in Dushanbe, said head of Handwritten Works Center of Tajikistan National Library. "The Shahnameh has been written with penmanship of Nasta'liq and decorated with illuminations in the manuscript's margins," said Abdullah Yunusov.

Dating back to about 494 years ago, it is probably the oldest handwritten Shahnameh available in the world, he added. He asked officials of world's libraries to inform the library if they had a more ancient Shahnameh.

According to Yunusov, there is no evidence about the name of the writer or the place it has been written. "The rich sources of Ferdowsi Library have propelled it into the limelight among Tajik and foreign scholars, researchers, and students," Yunusov said.

A total of 2200 manuscripts are kept at Ferdowsi Library established approximately 70 years ago. It is one of the richest libraries in Central Asia. The library holds the oldest handwritten versions of Sa'di's Bustan and Gulistan, Tabari's History, and Divan of Abd al-Rahman Jami. History, literature, and science are the general subjects of books kept in the library. It also contains several manuscripts in Azeri.

The library also has 30,000 books on different subjects in Persian, Arabic, English, Russian, and Uzbek.

Shiraz to Be Registered in UNESCO's City of Literature

payvand.com

Tehran, 12 January 2006 (CHN) -- UNESCO's national commission has chosen the city of Shiraz in Iran's Fars Province to be registered in the list of UNESCO's City of Literature. UNESCO's Creative Cities aims at creating a network of cities which are creative in the fields of literature, cinema, music, folk arts, design, media art, and gastronomy.

UNESCO's Global Alliance supports cultural diversity by strengthening cultural industries such as music, cinema and publishing in developing countries. It promotes respect for intellectual property rights and encourages public-private partnerships between its members.

In a letter submitted to Fars governor by UNESCO's National Commission, it has been suggested to prepare initiative facilities for inscribing Shiraz in the list of UNESCO's City of Literature.

With the agreement of Fars province, Shiraz will be the first Iranian city which would be registered in the list of UNESCO's Creative Cities.

This issue is going to be discussed further at the office of Fars governor with the presence of authorities who will gather to reach an agreement in this respect.

Some facilities such as holding artistic and literature festivals, active publishing, offering Persian literature courses in universities, and establishing rich libraries and bookstores containing Persian literature texts must be provided before the final registration of Shiraz in the list of UNESCO's City of Literature.

Edinburgh in Scotland is UNESCO's first city of literature. As the first UNESCO city of literature, Edinburgh became the founding member of the new Creative Cities Network. It seeks to harness the creative potentials of cities around the world in the fields of literature, cinema, music, folk art, design, media arts and gastronomy. The idea of creative cities encourages literary exchange and cross-cultural initiatives at the same time it builds relationships through a common passion for the development of a local, national and international literary culture.

Berlin in Germany and Buenos Aires in Argentina have been selected as creative cities in the field of design, Santa Fe in Mexico, and Aswan in Egypt have been chosen as folk art cities, and in the field of gastronomy Popayan in Colombia have been registered in the list of UNESCO's Creative Cities.

Poland to Bar Iranian Team from Auschwitz
By VOA News

Polish officials say they will not admit a research team Iran reportedly plans to send to Auschwitz, the notorious World War II Nazi death camp.

Polish Foreign Minister Stefan Mellar said his country should stop Iran from investigating the scale of the Holocaust, which Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has dismissed as a myth.

The manager of the Auschwitz museum said Friday that deniers of the Holocaust profane the memory of its victims and will not be admitted.

Most estimates put the number of deaths at Auschwitz alone at more than one million, mostly Jews.

Earlier this week, Iran's ambassador to Portugal said he doubts the number of victims of the Holocaust, usually estimated at about six million. He said that, based on what he has seen at Auschwitz, it would take about 15 years to burn that number of bodies.
