In a referendum this week in Bahrain, 98 percent of voters agreed that the
country should be a constitutional monarchy with an independent judiciary, a partly-elected
parliament, and female suffrage. The reforms were strongly backed by the emir, Sheik Hamad bin
Isa Al Khalifa. Bahrain became independent from Britain in 1971. Its first elected parliament was
suspended in 1975, leading to riots and resentment of the royal family, which is Sunni Muslim,
among the Shiite majority. After inheriting the throne in 1999, Sheik Hamad moved swiftly toward
democratic reform. Bahrain is expected to become a constitutional monarchy by 2004. The emir will
probably retain a great deal of power.

Brooke Shields weds in secret!

Brook Shields and TV scriptwriter and producer Chris Henchy sailed to their secret island wedding escorted by a group f dolphins and eight very surprised guests who though they were due to attend a quiet family dinner.

By meticulously guarding the secret, Brooke, 35, and Chris, 37, pulled off the Hollywood coup of the year.  Their sunset wedding took place on Catalina Island, 90 minutes off the coast of California, in front of Brook's father Frank and mother Teri, Chris's father and mother, and four close personal friends.

Soup of Legumes (serves 4)

2 tbsp oil
1 onion, peeled and roughly chopped 
1/2 tsp pimenton (Spanish paprika)
3 red peppers deseeded and in large chunks
2 leeks, trimmed and roughly chopped
1/2 head celery, chopped and with leafy tops left on
400g can chopped tomatoes
Chicken stock, salt and freshly grounded pepper
1 tbsp fresh snipped chives for decoration

Heat oil in a pan and fry onion over a gentle heat until slightly softened.  Add pimento, peppers, leeks and celery then toss around for a few minutes to color.  Pour over tomatoes and chicken stock.  Bring to bubbling, then turn down and simmer gently unit all vegetables are tender  Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.  Sprinkle with snipped chives to serve.
